Interpreting
I'm not a sworn interpreter because I majored in translation at the university, which prevents me from interpreting in court and for notaries public. However, I can and do interpret in many other situations. For example:
-
Marriages, if one or both of the future spouses doesn’t speak German
-
Helping clients communicate with the authorities, such as the Foreigners Office (Ausländeramt), the municipal authorities, the police, the civil registry office (Standesamt) or the Labor Office (Arbeitsamt)
-
Consultations with physicians
-
Negotiations, shareholders meetings, training courses
-
At schools, if a child’s parents need help communicating with the administration or a teacher
What’s involved is so-called “consecutive interpreting”: one speaker says 1-2 sentences and pauses so I can translate what they have said into the other language. Then I do the same in the other direction for the reply.
I regularly interpret for the police of Offenbach and Frankfurt am Main. There it primarily involves translating the statements of witnesses or individuals who are suspected of having committed a crime.
For best results, I need a briefing on the subject matter, the pursued goals, and the participants.
