Freelance translator for German↔English
for 40+ years 

My name is Gregory Woods and I’m originally from California. So English is my native language. After completing a degree in Creative Writing at the University of California at Santa Cruz, I came to Germany to enroll at Heidelberg University and become a translator. I graduated with a Diplom-Übersetzer degree, which is comparable to a master’s degree in translation, while specializing in law.

I’ve been working as a freelance translator, editor and interpreter for more than four decades. Over the years I’ve supported hundreds of companies, institutes, government bodies, agencies, law offices, institutions, and others. They have included the translation service of the German Bundestag (Germany’s national parliament), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, the German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection, the German Federal Ministry of Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure, the municipal governments of the cities of Heidelberg, Bendorf and Frankfurt am Main, the police of Offenbach and Frankfurt am Main, the legal departments of a long list of companies, various notaries public and a large number of law offices.

In September 2015 I was sworn by the Frankfurt am Main District Court as a “generally authorized translator” for German and English. This means that I’m empowered to certify my translations as correct and complete in accordance with Article 16, paragraph 3 of the German Federal Notarization Act and Article 142, paragraph 3 of the German Code of Civil Procedure.

I translate legal documents from German into English and vital records (birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, divorce certificates, diplomas and many others) in both directions.

I’ve been an active member of the German Bundesverband der Dolmetscher und Übersetzer e.V. (“Interpreters and Translators Association”) for many years.
